PAINTINGS INSPIRED BY PROVENCE, FRANCE

I’ve been very busy painting the first half of this year.  I’m trying to paint in series, meaning I’ll do several paintings of flowers…then turn to landscapes…tablescapes…interiors… and  even a bunny or two.  Today I’m posting several from Provence I’ve been working on with the artists collective I’m a member of called Flow Membership with Dreama Tolle Perry.

After painting with acrylics for many years, I decided to take a stab with oils, using Dreama’s alla prima method which is defined as wet-on-wet.  Layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers of transparent paint.  Used mostly in oil painting, the technique requires a fast way of working, because the work has to be finished before the first layers have dried.  The kicker for me was 2 fold…I paint with acrylics which dry much faster than oils and I am a slow painter.  I experimented with a slower drying acyrlic paint, Golden Open, which I like very much.  I also  decided to bite the bullet and paint with oils (Yes buying all the oil paints and the mediums that go with them.)  It took a good bit of experimenting to get the hang of painting with oil, but I am enjoying it.

That being said, I also have gone back to painting with the Golden Open Acrylics and am loving them.

This painting was inspired from a California garden/pool setting, but the mountains in the background reminded me of Provence.

9″x 12″ oil on Museum quality Gesso panel.   I used a first coat of Iridescent Gold Gesso.  Look closely and you can see the gold coming through for a pearlescent effect.

“BLUE DOORS OF PROVENCE”

Painted through my Flow Membership with Dreama Tolle Perry.  I had fun with his one because of the  all the blue doors and shutters.  What could be more Provence than blue!

Inspired by Domaine Faverot,  a winery in Provence with a glimpse of the distant vineyards and hills.

“LAVENDER FIELDS”

Inspired by the fields of lavender in the south of France (Provence).

 A thin coat of the Daniel Smith Iridescent Gold Gesso was applied as the first coat.  Then lots of greens and purples.
