As much as I love roses, I am also partial to the peony and the dahlia…two blooms that are simply perfection.
The peony blooms in the spring and is a national flower emblem of China; celebrating royalty, honor and wealth. In Victorian England it was said to signify bashfulness.
I say there is nothing bashful about this peony from my friend Susan’s Charlotte, NC garden.
And these from Janet’s Vermont garden. (Visiting there soon!)
I could not find any mention of dahlias by Shakespeare.
The only thing missing from a dahlia is a scent….
These dahlias are from the famous dahlia beds at the High Hampton Inn, in Cashiers, NC. During the summer each table in the dining room is adorned with dahlias.

Great pictures Kathy. Love the memories around that area! High Hampton is a special place.
It was beautiful and rustic as ever….a little hot, but the kids were rolling in the grass outside The Tavern.

Thank you Joy! Of course we can’t grow peonies or dahlias in Fl so I have to enjoy when I go north!
