FUN AT THE FARMERS MARKET

Farmers Market
n.
a food market at which local farmers sell fruit and vegetables and often meat, cheese, and bakery products directly to consumers.

While searching through thousands of photographs (actually trying to delete some photos to free up computer storage space) I found a few from the local farmers market.  Farmers markets have always been around, usually a fruit stand, a vegetable patch or just a farmer set up on the side of the road.

With the recent popularity of home grown foods, organic consciousness, and a vegetable, fruit rich diet taking the country by storm, many communities have endorsed  a local option…Saturdays are the day to visit your local farmers market in the morning and depending on time of the year watch your favorite football team, basketball team, or golfer in the afternoon.

Fernandina Beach/ Amelia Island is lucky to have 2 Farmers Markets.  Both are open on Saturdays 9-1.

The Amelia Farmers Market, at the Shops of Omni Amelia Island Plantation, has tropical flowering landscape plants, orchids and herbs ready for your garden.

One of my favorite booths, flavored olive oils.

Another favorite stop, The Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery.

“Open since the fall of 2008, the Plantation Artists’ Guild and Gallery has been supporting and encouraging its artist members to sell their art and interact with fellow artists and the public.”

I usually hit the Farmers Market at the Omni and then go to the downtown market.  My favorite view as I walk to the market, the Historic Courthouse on Centre Street, downtown Fernandina Beach.

Felix Jones, The Peanut Man, is a favorite person around town, riding his 3 wheeled bike, selling boiled peanuts,  a few fruits or home baked cookies and pies…

and always serenading customers with his harmonica.  Felix donates any proceeds to charities…An inspiration and  important member of our community.
