Ask any Floridian if the game played at Halloween every year is named the Florida/Georgia game, they will say yes. Georgia fans call it the Georgia/Florida game. I say it is one of the most exciting game day atmosphere anywhere in the country. Equal number of tickets are allotted to each school. The stadium is evenly divided; half Florida fans, half Georgia fans. My half roots for the Gators. This year Pops celebrated in style with his newly refurbished 1948 Chrysler New Yorker. The right shade of blue.
Many Georgia fans hit the Florida state line and head for Amelia Island, home of Fernandina Beach.
Every Friday before the big game on Saturday, the stores, golf courses, restaurants and bars in NE Florida are packed with fans anxious to celebrate the upcoming rivalry game.
The Plantation Shop at Palmetto Walk always has lots of events and special goings-on to entertain the fans.

This year we homegated. That’s right we tailgated in our home in front of the TV. Pops was excited about his newly refurbished car and our Gator decorations.
Even Sheldon got into the back seat for a ride!
Love the radio and remember learning how to shift gears….Oh the clutch.
I mentioned The Palace Saloon in my previous post. We served the original recipe for Pirate’s Punch developed by the original Palace Saloon owner, Aubrey Williams. I don’t know the secret recipe, but Anne Coonrod brought it to us in large liquor bottle. I found these red and black striped straws and thought they were appropriate for our Georgia friends. Didn’t know the Pirates were included, but fit perfectly with the Pirate’s Punch.
Goes down easy!
I served carrot hummus from The Southern Tailgating Cookbook by Taylor Mathis.
Carrot Hummus
Serving Size:
Ingredients
- 1 cup chopped carrots
- 2 (15 1/2 ounce) cans garbonzo beans, drained reserving liquid
- 1/2 cup tahini
- 6 tablespoons lemon juice
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
- 1 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
- 1/2 teaspoon grated orange zest
- 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 cup grated carrots
Instructions
- In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, cook the chopped carrots in water to cover until fork tender. Drain and add to the bowl of a food processor.
- Add the garbonzo beans, 4 tablespoons of the reserved bean liquid, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, grlic, salt, paprika, lemon and orange zest, Tabasco, cumin, and cloves. Process until an orange hummus of desired smoothness forms. Add bean liquid or olive oil if needed.
- Add the grated carrots and pulse a few times.
- Store in the refrigerator overnight.

This was a hit!!!!!
And a version of his Pimento Cheese Ball. I didn’t have time to make my own pimento cheese so I bought my favorite”Palmetto Pimento Cheese” and used that in honor of Tennessee playing South Carolina, the Palmetto State.
Our home was a happy home on Saturday. Duke won in double overtime, Florida won in a game that no one expected them to win (except Dan Hicken), and Tennessee won in overtime way past my bedtime!
For my Georgia friends, I know it is heartbreaking. I have been on the losing side so many times this season, yet always try to see the positive. There is nothing like school traditions, school loyalty, school pride, school bands (I love you), school empathy with the players and coaches who try so hard to please the fan base.
I love college football. I love the SEC. I love Ole Miss’s rise this year and congratulate Auburn for winning, but also feel the pain of an injury like Laquon Treadwell’s. He is in our thoughts and prayers.
South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore announces he is retiring from the NFL after a 2 year stint due to problems stemming from his horrific injury during the 2012 South Carolina/Tennessee game. He is in our thoughts and prayers.

Thanks Gina. I feel the same way. Always support great fan relationships. What would the game be if we couldn’t feel comfortable traveling to away games? I love visiting the many schools and enjoying their hospitality. Missouri is great at that btw. I had more Florida fans last year and Georgia fans this year tell me how wonderful the Missouri fans were, inviting them into their tailgates. LSU also invited my big Gator crew into their tailgate last year.
