A FLORIDA/GEORGIA TAILGATE WITH THE BOWLES AND PILLANS

I love a good college football rivalry and there is none better than the Florida/Georgia game held annually in Jacksonville, Florida.  This year’s game actually falls on October 31…Halloween!

Equal number of tickets are allotted to each school.  The stadium is evenly divided; half Florida fans, half Georgia fans, making for one of the most exciting game day atmospheres in the country.

The Florida Georgia game is always a huge event in Jacksonville, but especially on Amelia Island.  Many Georgia fans stay on Amelia Island and the atmosphere is very festive.

In celebration of the Florida/Georgia game we gathered two Amelia Island Plantation couples to show us how to throw a good tailgate.

South Island Living magazine recently featured this tailgate.  Written and styled by KathyMillerTime.

Paul and Rosalind Bowles are long time Georgia Bulldog fans.

Both attended the University of Georgia.  Paul received a BBA and served on The Alumni Board of Georgia Business School.  Rosalind is an Athens native and always took fried chicken livers to her tailgates.

Paul regaled me with the story of Georgia’s most memorable play…Buck Belue to Lindsay Scott in the 1980 Florida/Georgia game.  With Georgia backed up on their 8 yard line and time running out (1:35 time remaining), quarterback, Buck Belue faked to Herschel Walker then threw to Lindsay Scott hoping to get a first down.  Lindsay caught the ball and proceeded to run down the field trying to get into field goal position.  After he ran a few yards he thought, “Hell, I can take this thing to the house!” and did just that;  scoring a touchdown to win the game.  Revered Georgia radio play by play announcer, Larry Munson shouting “Run Lindsay!” became one of the most memorable sports commentary.

Georgia won the National Championship with a Sugar Bowl win over Notre Dame.

Every tailgate should have a good deviled egg.  Rosalind’s are delicious and have a twist.  She uses dill pickle relish instead of sweet pickle relish.

Charlie and Judy Pillans are avid Florida Gator fans with Charlie earning his undergraduate and law degree from the University of Florida.

For many years they sat in the Touchdown Terrace section at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville.   They attended many Florida/Georgia games and always a “night before” party of Gator faithful.  Charlie always wore his straw boater hat to this party.  His hat is unique.  It is ladened with his ticket stubs from every Gator game attended.

Judy attended the University of South Carolina, but has been a true Gator fan for years.  She shared 2 easy to make and transport cheese logs.

If you are a smoked oyster fan, this one is delicious.  I am!

Loved seeing this piece about two couples whom I cherish. And to think you featured the Georgia/Florida rivalry which is always such a fun time, no matter what side you pull for! Great job

  • Dave Miller says:

You must watch and listen to Larry Munson’s call of the Lindsay Scott catch and run linked by Kathy. It is one of the all time best college radio broadcast calls ever. Larry Munson and John Ward (Tennessee) were the best in their trade and truly allowed you to “see” the plays on radio.

  • Sue Braddock says:

Great story involving two great couples!
