I hope you had a very Merry Christmas and Holiday Season.

I think I stirred up some memories in my previous post about grandmothers and teetotalers.

For Christmas Eve I wanted to retell my Eggnog story.  Unfortunately the best laid plans don’t always go smoothly.  Our family is very fortunate in that Pops, my Gator father-in-law,  suffered a stroke on December 23, but was able to come home on Christmas Eve.  Thank you to the wonderful medical care; the 911 call, the immediate response, the clot buster medicine, the transfer to downtown Baptist Hospital and to great care in the Wayne and Delores B. Weaver Tower for  neurological patients.

After getting Pops settled at home we did decide to celebrate Christmas and did have a cup of Eggnog.

Every family has its ups and downs, sadness and happiness, but I learned from my father, humor helps you get through anything.  Sooooo here is my repeat of the Eggnog teetotaling Grandmother story and an Eggnog cup story right out of Christmas Vacation.

“I very well remember the first time I tasted real eggnog.  My teetotaling grandmother said, “let’s make eggnog!”  She never drank a drop of alcohol, but at Christmas, that was another thing.

Her recipe as I remember it was to place two beaten eggs in a glass, fill with bourbon and beat with an old fashioned eggbeater.  I remember thinking, wow!

I also didn’t think it tasted very good.

My new and improved recipe was given to me by a neighbor and our friends became eggnog drinkers at least at Christmas Time.”

Kathy’s Eggnog

Serving Size:

Ingredients

• 12 eggs beaten together
• 2 cups sugar
• 2 ½ cups bourbon
• 1 quart milk
• 1 1/2 quarts cream
• Nutmeg

Instructions

1. Beat eggs. Add sugar and beat well.
2. Dribble bourbon slowly to egg and sugar mixture, beating continuously.
3. Let stand overnight or longer in refrigerator.
4. Day of use, add 1 quart milk and 1 1/2 quarts cream, whipped and folded into bourbon mixture.
5. Sprinkle nutmeg on top. Makes 1 ½ gallons.

Notes

This is delicious but deceiving. Make sure your guests understand that bourbon is in the concoction.

For those who grew up watching Christmas Vacation with your parents,  I hope you appreciate.  For those parents, I hope you are howling and remembering every line.  Christmas Vacation has provided my family more funny quips and traditions.  If you haven’t seen Christmas Vacation please do! And remember Moose Eggnog Cups, Squirrel, Cousin Eddie, black dickies under white sweaters…..

 I have an eggnog cup story.

A couple of years ago I searched the internet for the moose cups from Wally World.  Clark and Eddie famously drank eggnog holding the moose ears.

I finally found a Canadian resource…and paid quite a bit for each cup.

I bought for my entire family, to be shipped in time for our Christmas Eve dinner.

On Christmas Eve day,  I received a certified letter stating, “the moose cups will not be delivered due to a kiln explosion at our plant.  We will notify you when the plant is rebuilt and the cups delivered.”

I thought “oh great”.  I probably said a few curse words at this point.  As my family gathered around our table, the best I could do was come up with “this is what I ordered and I doubt we will ever see these cups.”

We all laughed and couldn’t believe the kiln story. Dave also reminded us there was famously another kiln explosion in the movie “Animal House”.
In February I arrived home to discover a pile of boxes blocking my front door, 12 to be exact. On opening, I found each crystal moose head eggnog cup meticulously wrapped in custom foam pillows. The packaging must have cost as much as the cups.

The family received their eggnog cups the following Christmas.

On Christmas Eve we did serve the eggnog in these cups.

As I mentioned earlier, nothing ever goes as planned.  Our expensive eggnog cups had a problem with the nose.  Some of the noses fell off.

 So much for expensive eggnog cups.

Just get me the acrylic/plastic ones from the movie.  Someone would make a fortune.

And Pops was able to celebrate Christmas brunch with us.

We are thankful to our friends and family who have celebrated the special traditions of college football, tailgating, and homegating.

We are enjoying the bowl season and hope YOUR TEAM wins.

We will be in Jacksonville for the Tennessee/Iowa Taxslayer Bowl game with our good Iowa friends, Sue and Steve.  We will be mainly a Tennessee tailgate, but welcome all our friends.  I will be wearing a small Iowa button given to me by Sue’s mother, Barb who is a huge Iowa fan.

 Think we will be serving Tennessee Whiskey (Jack Daniel’s) slushies.
