For those of you familiar with my train of thought and the way I connect the dots….It can seem to take a roundabout way…Last week I somehow connected the FSU circus and the flying trapeze to motorized hang glide flying. Transportation is on my brain and plays a part in many of my Tailgating paintings.
When painting my tailgating series, I began with “Tailgating With The Vol Navy” for obvious reasons. (UT is my alma mater).
I included the boats on the Tennessee River tied next to one another; a very unique tailgating tradition.
When I traveled to Athens to take pictures for my “Tailgating Under The Arch” painting, I passed a beautiful ’57 Chevy station wagon on the road from Atlanta to Athens. I knew I wanted to include that ’57, red and white Chevy in my Georgia painting.
When “Tailgating in The Grove”, I couldn’t resist including the red double decker bus traveling between The Grove and Oxford.
Arkansas has a big street festival every fall, called Bikes, Blues and BBQ. We were there and I included a couple of bikers in my “Tailgating In The Ozarks” painting.
Missouri has a vintage yellow fire truck that transports Truman The Tiger, Mizzou’s mascot, during all home games.
And speaking of trains, as in the old Steve Martin, John Candy Christmas movie, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” South Carolina features the Cockaboose Railroad; 22 refurbished cabooses sitting on dead tracks right outside the stadium.
These are a centerpiece of my “Tailgating With The Cockaboose Railroad” painting.
I love vintage trucks and have taken pictures of interesting cars and trucks where and when ever I find them.
This vintage truck is parked at the Eight Flags Antique Market on Centre Street in Fernandina Beach, Florida. It inspired the two-toned yellow and white truck in my Tailgating In Vandyville painting.
When working on my composition for the Kentucky painting, I wanted a feeling of horse farms, Kentucky bluegrass and tailgates or picnics in the fields. I used this photo of a truck I found in Cashiers, NC as inspiration. Just changed the color from red to Kentucky blue.

That red truck inspired me to create a vintage tailgate using my collection of vintage coolers and Thermos containers.

Thank you to Bill and Judy Durham for allowing us to create a vintage tailgate using this great red truck. I stopped by their shop, Cashiers Customs Furniture & Kitchens to ask permission to photograph the truck. The truck belongs to Judy’s son. It was his grandfathers truck.

I know exactly where that red truck was in Cashiers – I recognize that furniture store sign and surroundings. And yes, I do like your outfit…. very cute!!
