The Great Mississippi Balloon Race in Natchez, MS was a giant success! My friend, James Johnston, took these stunning photographs. James said, “Conditions were perfect for the tortoise and hare race Friday morning. I flew with a very knowledgeable, 20 year veteran pilot. We launched from the Alcorn campus, flew north over the city to the airport. Took several photos while in the balloon (nerves, I felt compelled to hold on).”
Bigger than a semi!
POW MIA YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN
If you remember from my previous Natchez TRAVEL THOUGH MISSISSIPPI BEFORE OR AFTER YOUR COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROAD TRIP story, a Tennessee Vol balloon attended the 2013 Race.
James said, “unfortunately the Tennessee Vol balloon was a no-show the entire weekend.”
Must have been flying over The Grove and Ole Miss/ Tennessee ballgame! Didn’t help my Vols though.
THANK YOU JAMES. OCTOBER IS A BEAUTIFUL TIME ALL OVER THE COUNTRY, BUT ESPECIALLY IN MISSISSIPPI!
The Florida/Georgia game in Jacksonville is coming up soon, Nov. 1. Come down for the Greatest Outdoor Cocktail Party. Visit Amelia Island and meet Loran Smith signing his newest book, “Spread Formation: Tailgating & Home Recipes From College Football Greats!”
Loran will be signing on the porch at The Plantation Shops at Palmetto Walk, Friday, October 31 from 11-2.
I will be there too, showcasing my “Tailgating Through The South” prints, so drop on by!
Watch for upcoming stories from my tailgating travels. I welcome your comments, recipes and any inside information on your favorite tailgating spots.
Come celebrate with me. I’ll save you a seat at the table.

Many years ago our now! Corporate CEO Henry Bedford, who was treasurer at the time took my family up for a balloon ride-quite a thrilling experience. I was surprised at how much work was involved in getting going & leaving but it was one of the neatest experiences of my life.
I learned dogs really do not like Hot Air Balloons! LOL?
Thank you for your comment Dave! I have never been up but would love to do so sometime. Maybe next year during the Natchez, Great Mississippi Balloon Race. James said he was nervous, but he sure took some fine photos.
